Peek at My Week: Figurative Language, Metaphors, Similes and Poetry with Pigs!

Hey y'all, I haven't done a peek at my week in a looooonnnnggg time but I thought I would give it a go this week. I've been on spring break and it has rained everyday! We've been as lazy as pigs! Haha... thus starts our week at school. Kids are already familiar with many similes and metaphors that involve pigs! I'm sure they've been told their room "looks like a pigsty." Do you think some of them may "eat like a pig?" They might get you to let them skip a night of homework... "when pigs fly!" Just kidding, I have done that one a lot lately! Here are some of my favorite pig books to get us started.

Here is a peek at my visual plans, click on the picture for the pdf file with links to some of the products that I will be using this week.
POETRY

These posters help me get started with the introduction to metaphors and similes. There are 10 figurative language and poetry posters in my When Pigs Fly packet.

I love this introductory activity that is part of the anticipation set of the unit. There are always some funny responses. Can't wait to see what my students write and draw this year!
POETRY

Diamantes are lots of fun and give a lot of practice with parts of speech. Students begin to grasp that poetry speaks through emotions and senses, and it's not always in complete sentences.

POETRY

Here is another diamante form that uses antonyms instead of synonyms.
POETRY

This will be one of my centers this week so students can practice what they have learned. There are 16 figurative language phrases and matching meanings. Students will write the matches they make on the recording sheet. Later they will be challenged to use these in writing.

POETRY

I love using these differentiated texts with my class because there are 4 different levels of each text and the question sets are tiered. That means my lowest readers can participate in answering some of the same questions as my higher readers. That makes them feel awesome!

This week we will be reading "Recycling Saves Trees" from this packet

earth day

My students love these Duck Dynasty Passages for our fluency practice. Repeated readings and daily activities build fluency and comprehension.

POETRY

I hate to see my spring break end.... but I do miss my students (most of them anyway ;) and am excited to get back to work and finish the year up strong!

Thanks Mrs. Will's Kindergarten for the linkup!
