This is not the first time that I have a student that doesn't celebrate Halloween, and it won't be the last. I don't really let it bother me, though I love all things Halloween! I thought I would share with you how I intend to make it a fun and interesting week, without celebrating Halloween and without losing focus of our educational goals!
My class has been studying nonfiction/fiction, fact/opinion, and true/false. Some students get opinion and false statements confused, as well as fiction and false. We take it very slow, and one concept at a time. This week I will introduce myths with a study of fact and myths.
These two texts are the perfect pairs for some monster fun! Of course you could use just about any monster fiction book, but the Myth or Fact book is a must for this unit, and it includes some online fun as well!
An engaging way to learn about myths and facts!
Monster myths are often based on real life animals!
Practice with nouns, verbs, and adjectives in a fun and meaningful way while students are learning about "monsters!"
Reptiles are the subject of many myths! Students will find out why they are so misunderstood and write a persuasive paragraph "Reptiles Are not Monsters!"
End the unit with this fun "Create a Monster" Craftivity.
Just print on colored paper... many parts are on each page, so you can divide them up and save some paper.
Cut out and glue the parts together to get any combination like these cute little monsters!
Instead of a Halloween party... host this movie with popcorn and drinks! Easy, less hype, and not "Halloween!"
Some may think this is dancing around the Halloween theme, I suppose it is... but my student's parents probably won't have a problem as long as it is educational and not mentioning Halloween. Which makes me a happy camper too!
